If you think Trump is the only one capable of dehumanization
Dehumanization is a psychological problem that is apart of human nature as disgusting as it is. Its been around for ages and we have seen key aspects of it in our films as we watch superhero movies like Xmen, Avengers, and other such movies. I think the easiest way to put what Trump is doing into a logical perspective is to compare to the Xmen which is underrated Marvel comic series that I adored as a female child.
The main problem about dehumanization is that people do not like to admit to having prejudices against others as it is morally wrong just like killing someone without a reason. We don’t like to admit that there is a tiny- ever so pressing voice that makes us sometimes look at people as less than human- or as beasts. This little tick can kick in when we think about the homeless, or a group of people that have been inbred into society as bad. You can find it everywhere in history from the Egyptian slaves, Greek slaves, and our own American history. Historically, people have found ways to treat each other as less than human and the worst groups have been led by high leaders that were able to convince people that this one belief was just or right.
Let’s put into perspective the wretched truth about Xmen and why the movie franchise will never run out of content with the series and relate it back to human natures ability to dehumanize each other
Xmen are a group of mutants that were formed to help develop relationships between mutants and humans by a man named Charles Xavier. However, mutants are not welcome among humans still, and will always be apart of hate among humans because of their evolutionary development. Mutants are mutants because of an evolutionary advancement in human strands of DNA making them unique and powerful a problem that humans have had even among those without powers for ages.
The story itself teaches us more about the cruelty in human nature
Mutants were treated as little less than scum among the regular people. At first, Mutants were forced to hide — being told to not use their power, and to never let a human know you are different. If you look at this and compare it to human nature via history we have seen similar treatments. America is most notable for its treatment of Japanese internment camps which forced a similar situation, or the Nazi’s in Germany with the Jews.
“: Mutants are not the ones mankind should fear. Senator Kelly: I have here a list of names of identified mutants living right here in the United States. Dr. Jean Grey: Senator… Senator Kelly: Here’s a girl in Illinois who can walk through walls. Now what’s to stop her from walking into a bank vault, or the White House, or [indicating the gallery] Senator Kelly: into their houses? Dr. Jean Grey: Senator, please… Senator Kelly: …and there are even rumors, Miss Grey, of mutants so powerful that they can enter our minds and control our thoughts, taking away our God-given free will. Now I think the American people deserve the right to decide if they want their children to be in school with mutants. To be taught by mutants! Ladies and gentlemen, the truth is that mutants are very real, and that they are among us. We must know who they are, and above all, what they can do! “
If you notice in that quote it shows the raw fear of the human nature to be scared of what we do not understand which is apart of the dehumanization process. If you don’t understand it fear it, if you can’t fear it , hate it, and if you can’t hate it why not destroy it? This premises is driven into peoples brains by the people we are supposed to follow based on cultures. The Nazi’s didn’t understand the Jews so chose to destroy them than to understand. Americans were angry at the Japanese due to pearl harbor, so chose to put Japanese Americans into internment camps out of fear of a spy living among them.
Coincidentally, this aspect of treating one another has not changed. We Americans had nine eleven which caused a drastic distrust in Muslims which has become a catalyst for Trumps anti-Muslim ban that people are going crazy about.
Based on our past, and factual evidence in psychology it is natural for humans to turn to immoral rationality to handle a certain culture that doesn’t agree with theirs. It is the reason during the Trump Era people are divided by allowing trump to dehumanize a select group without reason, or to rally against such a decision.
If a travel ban is instated it shouldn’t be made for only Muslim countries as radical terrorists can be found in any country, and if you think about it a dehumanization of any group could be considered terrorism as it feeds off of peoples fear.
What do we learn from the Xmen and looking at Trump?
We can see that human nature does not change. Even after the Xmen save the world numerous times mutants are still hunted, and they are still feared. We have two decisions as people. We must either let fear win, or lead by example. I have been taught regardless of race, money, housing, and any other situation a person is in to treat them with kindness because kindness will be remembered. A smile will be remembered. An honest conversation can go down in history. Yes- it may be natural for groups of people to dehumanize one another, but it is also natural for people to want to believe in the good in one another.
